Gold prices flat as U.S. inflation data takes centre-stage
  + stars: | 2024-05-15 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold prices traded flat on Wednesday as investors looked forward to a critical U.S. inflation print that could offer clues on the Federal Reserve's interest rate-cut trajectory. Spot gold held its ground at $2,359.99 per ounce, as of 0704 GMT, trading in a narrow $6 range, after gaining 1% on Tuesday. According to a Reuters poll, the data is expected to show that core inflation in April rose 0.3% month-over-month, down from 0.4% the prior month. Bullion is known as an inflation hedge, but higher rates increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold. However, data on Tuesday showed that U.S. producer prices increased more than expected in April.

U.S. crude oil inventories fell 3.104 million barrels in the week ended May 10, according to market sources citing American Petroleum Institute figures on Tuesday. Gasoline inventories fell by 1.269 million barrels and distillates rose by 673,000 barrels. "Expectations of another drawdown in U.S. oil inventories should support oil prices," ANZ Research said in a note. Oil prices also found support from a softer U.S. dollar and stimulus measures from China, said independent market analyst Tina Teng, with a weaker greenback making dollar-denominated oil cheaper for investors holding other currencies. "The U.S. CPI and China's economic data are key to driving oil prices for the rest of the week," she added.

Buckle up, cowpoke: On Wednesday, Beyoncé shared the track list for her forthcoming album, “Act ll: Cowboy Carter." A Kansas man is suing Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., over social media posts that falsely identified him as an undocumented immigrant and one of the shooters in the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade that turned deadly last month. "At no time was Plaintiff an 'alien,' an 'illegal alien,' nor a 'shooter' and the assertions to the contrary were false and were circulated widely among Defendant's followers," the lawsuit states. Burchett in February posted an image of Loudermill on X, identifying him as "one of the Kansas City Chiefs victory parade shooters" and "an illegal Alien." Federal courts require cases seeking damages between people in different states, such as this one, to exceed $75,000. Although he was released and not cited or charged with a crime, the lawsuit states, his image began circulating on social media, eventually landing on Burchett's page.

With various North Slope oil production projects just ramping up, the years ahead look very promising for trucking in Alaska. Among the new North Slope activities is the ConocoPhillips Willow Project, which the Biden administration approved last year. Most of the North Slope oil infrastructure (supplies, machinery, parts) is supplied by trucks that have to traverse the 414-mile Dalton Highway (Alaska Route 11).

On Tuesday, Beyoncé announced via her site and social media that her forthcoming album is “Act II: Cowboy Carter” and set to arrive March 29. In a recent interview with Knox News, Dolly Parton was asked about speculation Beyoncé has recorded one of Parton’s hits for her new album. I think she’s recorded ‘Jolene’ and I think it’s probably gonna be on her country album, which I’m very excited about that,” Parton said. THE ENIGMA GIRLS: How Ten Teenagers Broke Ciphers, Kept Secrets and Helped Win World War II, by Candace FlemingAs war raged in Europe in 1941, Sarah Norton, the 18-year-old daughter of an English lord, received a letter in a plain brown envelope with no return address. “You are to report to Station X at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire in four days’ time,” said the letter, signed by a mysterious “Commander Travis.” “That is all you need to know.”Little did Sarah realize she was being recruited for Britain’s top-secret wartime code-breaking operation. “This is the story of a handful of young women — teenagers really — who left their childhoods behind and walked into the unknown,” Candace Fleming writes in “The Enigma Girls,” her beguiling new account of their contributions. “For most of their lives, they never breathed a word about their war experiences.”We learn about 10 of these real-life conscripts. And there was Diana Payne, just 17, who helped operate the massive “Bombe” machines, which sped up the process of breaking the enemy’s ever-shifting codes.

DETROIT (AP) — The New York Knicks picked up some needed scoring punch Thursday, acquiring Alex Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic from the Detroit Pistons. The Knicks sent Quentin Grimes, Evan Fournier, Malachi Flynn, Ryan Arcidiacono and two second-round picks to the Pistons in the deal before the NBA's trade deadline. They found it in Burks, who played well in a previous stint for the Knicks, and Bogdanovic, a reliable outside shooter. Bogdanovic is averaging 20.2 points and shooting 41.5% from 3-point range. The Pistons, who have the worst record in the league, were busy ahead of the trade deadline.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A federal lawsuit filed Friday says that a woman who died last February shouldn't have been discharged from a Tennessee hospital, forced to leave despite her pleas for more help and unassisted by security guards and police during a medical emergency. Security officers at the hospital called police Feb. 5, 2023, saying that Edwards had been evaluated and discharged, but she was refusing to leave. The lawsuit filed in Knoxville names three officers who were later disciplined by the city's police department, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel. But she is rebuffed by officers and hospital security guards who become frustrated with her inability to step up into the van and tell her she is faking her incapacity. “This was an emergency medical condition that began and worsened on hospital property and that was unequivocally preventable and treatable,” the lawsuit states.

Now his phone keeps up with him — the Z Fold5 has enough battery to last a full day, including video calls. Louis Angel Scott, the cofounder and COO of Cutbox, a UK-based barber chain that offers convenient and affordable cuts, understands this clearly. Angel Scott and his cofounder initially founded Cutbox out of frustration with long wait times associated with the barbering industry. Samsung created products like the Galaxy Z Fold5 for technology-leaning entrepreneurs like Angel Scott. "The back-end experience is so seamless to access on the Z Fold5 due to the bigger screen," Angel Scott said.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Artificial intelligence should improve pensions performance by cutting costs and highlighting upcoming risks, the Mercer CFA Institute's global pensions report said on Tuesday, with the Netherlands in top spot in this year's index. Additional uses for AI could include building customised portfolios and identifying market anomalies, although AI was unlikely to be able to predict market movements with accuracy so uncertainty will remain, the report said. The Wall Street sign is pictured at the New York Stock exchange (NYSE) in the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York, U.S., March 9, 2020. A shorter settlement time might increase efficiency, cut collateral needs, and "increase the competitiveness and the attractiveness of EU financial markets", ESMA said. ESMA is seeking views for a cost/benefit analysis of moving to at least T+1, though few believe it will not go ahead given advances in technology, regulatory pressure, and gravitational pull of Wall Street. EFAMA, a European funds industry body, says the move on Wall Street will require changes to existing IT systems for European firms and U.S. investors who trade European shares. There is already talk of moving to the next stage after T+1: instant or simultaneous settlement.
